Bring Value to the Table... or How to be THE Team Player

Loads of articles have been published in Edmonton lately on how to manage remote teams effectively, how to help your employees to be successful, and how to stay positive during unexpected changes and uncomfortable settings. But what about corporate team leads and supervisors? Let’s flip to another side and discover the ways how to be an active team player and bring the value to the table.

Take on their position

We all dream about building a successful career in the industry and becoming a CEO one day… So imagine yourself at that position now. You have your team that looks for your directions and support but also the results to achieve. Some days are good, the other - not so much. How would you feel? What would you need to manage the workload and promote a healthy balance? That is pretty much what your superior feels and needs now. Yes, we are all different and have diverse approaches and business styles, but down the road – on the emotional side, we are all humans. By understanding the cognitive-affective perspective of others, you will improve communication and build a better relationship.

Open and honest communication

In teamwork, the silence isn’t golden. It is deadly.”

- Mark Sanborn

And I can’t agree more. Effective communication is the key to all aspects of our life. Depending on how good you are in expressing your ideas and exchanging thoughts, that is how easy and fast you will be able to move forward with your projects and tasks. If open and honest communication is a part of a culture within your organization, use it as a tool to achieve your goals. It is 2022, and we all have freedom of speech, so let’s exercise it. If the task is too hard or the timeline is not reasonable – say it. If you forget about the assignment – admit it. If you see how to make things better – voice it. If you need help – ask for it. But do not leave your superior to sit and wonder what the reason behind schedule deviation or collection rate is. Only when you communicate effectively, you can receive the support you need.

Do your job correctly, on time

It is as simple as it is. There is a justification behind each procedure in your organization (unless it is a start-up at its early stage with very wishy-washy rules), and they are there for a reason. I am not saying to blindly follow the corporate book and not to question the protocol. Ask questions – study shows that our brain has lower resistance if it understands the reasons for particular routs of things to be done. If you can not deliver, re-evaluate your approach and look for ways to overcome obstacles. Ask your peers who are more successful in that specific area how they accomplish tasks and see if you can adjust your routine. Easier to say than to do? I do not think so. All comes back to open and honest communication, and not only with other human beings, but more importantly, with yourself.

Challenge the routine with a playful mindset

Be playful and (consciously) enjoy your workplace. Challenge the way something is done with a positive attitude, as you might find a shortcut or more cost-efficient way to accomplish your team’s goals. Playfulness boosts creativity and lowers the stress level, leading to higher productivity and motivation for the whole group. It will bring value and demonstrate your ability to contribute to the overall company’s growth. When we are playful, we do not build the defense walls and are open to feedback. By showing to your supervisor that you can laugh at yourself and look at the situation from the different angles, you prove to be a strong and driven team player.
