IQ Gets You Hired, EQ Gets You Promoted

According to the World Economic Forum, Emotional Intelligence (EI) was ranked in the top 10 workplace-skills needed to achieve success in 2022. If IQ can get you hired, EQ (Emotional Quotient) is the one to get you promoted. In reality, a good network navigates you to the top, while emotional intelligence assists to build this network.

It is essential to understand that EI is not the opposite of Intelligence; it is not the triumph of heart over head – it is a unique intersection of both.
— David Caruso

Emotional Intelligence is how you understand your feelings and make life choices based on this understating, not just row data and impulses. It is also about how good you are in perceiving the other’s feelings and what conclusions you make based on that knowledge. Let's take a closer look at how EI can be used as a tool in building a happy workplace.

Successful Negotiations

My favorite EI subscales to be used to achieve the most beneficial outcome of any negotiation would be Reality Testing and Problem Solving. Since we are looking for a win-win result in this dialog, we need to focus on being grounded and practical, but absolutely aware of our opponent’s needs. If you can use your Problem-Solving Skills to propose an efficient and cost-attractive solution – the deal is closed. Keep in mind that emotions should be considered on each level of effective negotiations. By expressing your empathy verbally and showing the client your clear understanding of how this deal affects their company’s goals, you will help them to arrive at a decision faster.

Conflict Management

Observe how you react to problems and if you can remain “cool under the fire.” If your Impulse Control is lower than your Stress Tolerance, it might impact your overall performance and well-being. Study shows that employees with higher EI are less likely to be negatively affected in stressful situations. Denial of your own emotions is not an option, so you might want to seek social support to assist during the time of stress and use mindfulness techniques to navigate pressure and anxiety.

Productive Meetings

If you want to bring value to the table, pay attention to the balance between your Assertiveness and Interpersonal Relationships. If you tend to focus more on promoting your views, it means that your team might feel the lack of understanding of their proposals and it might influence “give and take” in your work relationships. By balancing these two categories, you will gain a deeper understanding of your co-workers’ point of view and be able to build a stronger bond between the team.

Decision Making

Your decisions should be based on your experience and intuition, as that is how you will build the Confidence-Experience Loop. However, you might want to consider your team’s alternative solutions to a problem, as new ideas and approaches are coming each day. In this case, you will need to balance your Flexibility and Independence. You want to be receptive to ideas of others but avoid being passively complaint. The key is to be willing to change while standing firm when you need to do so.

Well-being and Happiness

Happiness comes from your willingness to learn and grow. Try to set realistic goals that support what you are trying to achieve in your career and life. Research suggests that if the direction you choose is not alighted with what is essential in your life – most likely, you will not feel satisfaction once the journey is accomplished. Even if you have a high level of Self-actualization, further development in that area will promote feelings of achievement and overall life satisfaction.
